Me v. ski

After my hiatus from posting the minutia of my life I am back and ready to numb your minds like old times!

So, my husband began trying to get me to ski about sixteen minutes into our first date.  And twelve years later I am here to tell you it never took.  Ski shares, private lessons, custom boot inserts.  Nothing ever persuaded me.  I still dread everything about it.  And while I've accepted that it will be an annual family event, I have ramped down my participation to where I just get everyone ready and drop them at the mountain.  The kids have ski school and he can ski with a buddy (there is always a buddy when you are a skier).  That's where we are now.

Well, we are leaving for our family ski trip on Sunday and found out that the buddy has just shattered his knee.  And I'm sure he was doing something dangerous and ski guyish so I'm just glad that he is alive but back to the issue:  what does that mean for me?  Do I have to nut up and be the buddy?  I wasn't even planning on packing my ski pants.  I'm already stress sweating.

Love,
Kristen

  1. I really wish you'd take a liking to the sport so we could have TWO dums on our annual trip... Sorry, but I'm on your husband's side! :-)

    1. I'll make you a deal - come on the trip & we won't mock you mercilessly when you don't ski with us, as long as you do a shot-ski (or 20) with us... Deal?

  3. Oh, Kristen. Come in for a hug because I HATE SKIING. On a youth group trip in 8th grade, I slid all the way down a blue on my butt, crying. In college, I went with a boyfriend and screamed "I'm sorry" to many people as I almost collided with them and/or caused them to crash. One of the reasons that I married my husband is that he lives in Colorado and has no desire to go skiing. I too would love to love it. But it's just one big exercise in muscle clenching for me.
Do not nut up. He'll be fine on his own.

  4. Emily, I cannot tell you how much better that makes me feel! My muscles start clenching in the lodge. That said, what are your thoughts on a snowboard lesson?

  5. Also, I'm so jealous your husband doesn't ski.

  6. The trick to skiing is taking two runs, stopping for a margarita, then maybe taking a few more runs and then enjoying "apres-ski", otherwise known as happy hour...trust me.

  7. I am generally opposed to strapping anything onto my feet and going down an icy mountain, but I understand you're trying to compromise. Let me know if you do it.

  8. Dummy,

I'm with LLV! That is exactly how I ski! Two runs, beer and a shot, two runs, lunch, two runs, beer and shot, two runs, apres ski. DONE! Asleep by 8pm.

    Love,
    katie
